Newman
Association at Stevens
The Newman Association at Stevens Institute
of Technology is an organization embracing the Roman Catholic tradition.
Our mission is to encourage
the spiritual and personal growth of the entire Stevens community.
We offer Christian witness, prayerful worship, pastoral care,
and ministerial presence to all faiths through Christ's Gospel message
as we manifest it in our thoughts, words, and deeds. Hence, our
apostolate
aims to enhance the values intrinsic to our members through involvement
in both on- and off-campus activities.
The Newman Association at Stevens is an active member of the Stevens
Campus Ministry Council, the New Jersey Catholic Campus Ministry
Network, the National Catholic Campus Ministry Association, and
the National
Catholic Student Coalition. We are a Recognized Student Organization
chartered by the Stevens Student Government Association.
Cardinal Newman and the Newman Movement
Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890) is the patron of Catholic
Centers on secular campuses. He advocated the compatibility
of theology and scientific investigation, a radical stand for
his day and age. In
1864, he worked to establish an oratory at Oxford University
to serve Catholics he hoped would enroll there. In the end, he
had to abandon
the idea when the Catholic bishops prohibited their students
from attending Oxford.
But after his death, a group of former students succeeded in
establishing such a center. Its first president announced, "No better name could
be found than the name of the great English cardinal who fought his
way into the Church during the stirring days of the Oxford Movement." The
first Newman Center helped Catholic students improve themselves
socially, intellectually, and religiously in the university
setting.
The Newman Movement spread from England to the United States
and throughout the world. Initiated at Stevens at the turn of
the century,
the Newman Club was chartered in 1938. Today, in the spirit
of Cardinal Newman and the movement's founders, the Stevens Newman
efforts are engineered
to provide opportunities for enrichment that benefit both our
Stevens Newman Family and the entire campus community.
